GlaxoSmithKline Plc, manufacturer of Avandia, recently agreed to pay approximately $60 million in settlements for the first round of lawsuits filed against the drug. This amount accounts for the over 4,000 law suits that have already been filed alleging that the drug causes heart attack and stroke in users. It has been projected that Glaxo will face at least another 9,000 lawsuits due to Avandia injuries. It was reported that the London based company has already suffered financial loss because of reports linking Avandia to heart attack and stroke. Their shares have dropped ten percent in London Trading since the May 2007 report in the New England Journal of Medicine exposed the risks. Last month Glaxo reported that they have increased the reserves for legal matters by 210 million pounds in preparation for the coming settlements.

Meanwhile, researchers and consumers continue to urge Glaxo to end the current TIDE trial and remove Avandia from the market. The trial, comparing the safety of Avandia next to the seemingly safer drug Actos, is set to continue through 2015, exposing 16,000 patients worldwide to a serious risk of injury. A February report from two U.S. Senators noted that Avandia is believed to be causing 500 avoidable heart attacks a month.
